Computers for kids

So yes, I like Linux (an alternative to windows). I thought I would post a few kid-targeted distributions if anyone wanted to install them. You can probably use an older computer to set them up and they come installed with great games and educational programs right 'out of the box'.

First up is Foresight Kids

Also very friendly is Edubuntu

The hardest thing about these distributions is burning the CD or DVD. Essentially, you download the .iso file (a disk image file) and then burn the disk image. Burning a disk image is probably an option in most CD burners. I can bring home some read to install disks at Christmas if people ask me.

One final note about running Linux, to install new programs you don't surf online, find the .zip installer program and download it. On Linux, you start the package manager program and it connects to a public library of all the free software you can download. Package management (program management) on Linux is fantastic.
